EVA FOREST: SIMBOL OF THE INTELECTUAL AND INTERNATIONALIST COMPROMISE

If something has characterized the Eva Forest's life, is what has turned her on a symbol for all, both inside as outside the Basque Country, it has been, without a doubt her eternal and untiring fight in defence of the oppressed and against the exploiter. A consequent attitude followed until the last day of her long life that has placed her outside all the power spheres and the perks that emanate from it.

Persecuted, tortured, jailed, exiled, marginalised from all the official circuits, Eva Forest has shown with her life and in practice what must be the work of an intellectual before a more violent, more unjust, more unbalanced world daily. Her human, political and social commitment has put in evidence all those "personalities of international prestige" that do nothing but to serve the power justifying all its excesses.

But at the same time, her enormous intellectual figure has never supposed a problem to Eva Forest at the time of approaching the humble, the most needed, whom suffer most... She has always known not only how to approach them, how to understand them, but also how to live with them, the true personal and collective dramas, often reacting with rage and passion before injustice. Any body that has been able to attend her conferences on Iraq, Cuba, Venezuela or the Basque Country, can vouch for it.

The WORD, the word, in oral or written form, has been the main instrument of struggle used by Eva Forest, her word as well as the word of all those condemned to silence. The word that subversive mean systematically attacked by the power anywhere in the world. Talks, conferences, articles, books, writings, hers and those of the silenced, they constitute the legacy of Eva Forest's long battle. A legacy and a lesson that we will never forget.

We do not want to finish this note, without directing to us before addressing her family, and specially her husband, Alfonso Sastre, both united in love and in the struggle. You have lost one of the fundamental pillars of your great family, but we want tell you that Eva Forest will continue being among us because she will always be a permanent reference for all the people that here, in the Basque Country, as well as at worldwide level, we continued fighting for a different world.
