SELF DETERMINATION GERNIKA NETWORK

We, elected representatives and MPs, members of the Self-determination Gernika Network, taking into account the recent local and regional elections of 27th May 2007, the end of ETAs permanent cease fire and the imprisonment of Arnaldo Otegi (Batasunas spokesperson and head of the negotiation Commission), declare:

- The conflict that confronts Spanish and French states with the Basque Country has political roots. This political conflict must be solved throw an equal base dialogue among all political and social parties, and has to reach a political agreement on the future of the Basque Country. It is time to end with all exceptional laws.



- The imprisonment of Arnaldo Otegi, spokesperson of Batasuna and head of the Negotiation Commission does not help to build up trust among the parties involved in the conflict and creates even more difficulties in order to achieve an equal base dialogue that will promote a democratic solution. The Spanish state should, by once, stop all repressive policies and act with courage for a political dialogue in order to solve the ongoing conflict.



- The end of the cease fire declared by ETA shows that, unfortunately, since 22nd March 2006 there has not been a dialogue process with the intentions of solving the roots of the conflict: Territoriality and the right to Self determination. It is not possible to build up any peace process if those fundamental rights, which are the root of the conflict, are denied.



- We, MPs and elected representatives all over Europe, renew our compromise to work nationally and internationally for a peaceful and democratic solution to the conflict in the Basque Country. Therefore we call for all our colleagues around Europe, MPs and elected representatives, to join us promoting a democratic peace process that will solve the ongoing conflict in the Basque Country. We believe that by building peace in the Basque Country we are also building peace in Europe.
