For the Spanish state, the Basque left is not a group that have rights but a potential beneficiary of favors. According to this absolutist theory, their participation in the political life exclusively depends on their behavior: If they behave in the way claimed by the State, they will be allow to participate; if not, they will be excluded. Even worse, trying to make the victims responsible of the State despotism, the State say they are excluding themselves.

On May 2007, the State persecute and illegalized the lists of candidates of the Basque left in a relentless way, but they allow a few of them, the ones that suited the State interests. As the failed talks were still not closed, they wanted to transmit to the Basque left this evil message "If you surrender, we will give you this and even more". They did not surrender and the strategy consisting in the offer of little concessions failed. From this moment, denying rights is little in keeping with ethics, but it is in keeping with the antidemocratic interests of the State: To illegalize the few allowed lists reinforce the image of strength against the Basque left. Regrettably, this strategy allows the State to win votes. On the other side, to illegalize the few plots of freedom left is another message to the Basque left: "This is what deserve the ones that to not surrender faced with the State exigencies. You will rot in out of the law because this is what you chose "

Since the State verified the Basque left would not surrender, they left the carrot policy and just apply the stick one. One of the aims of this policy is to illegalice the political groups that have common interests with the Basque left: the Communist Party of the Basque Land (PCTV/EHAK) Basque Nationalist Action (ANV). The State have spent months trying to develop strategies to illegalize both of them, specially from the moment that ANV announced that they will take part in the Spanish general elections (that will take place on March 9) in order to claim in the Spanish Parliament the independence for our people. From this very moment, all the fascist wheels of the Spanish political machine were set in motion: the media created an artificial social alarm in order to prepare the public opinion; the political parties in the opposition strongly support the illegalization; the PSEO government intelligence services are preparing rapports to support a measure that has been already taken, and they have said to the judges the steps to take. The government have also strengthen the links with the Basques who cooperate with them (mainly the parties PNV and NaBai) so that they do not make this strategy of illegalization difficult because they also will be beneficiated with it. And, specially, the government have keep a constant harassment regarding the aimed groups, so that they know they can do nothing to prevent the illegalization, which is more and more closer.

No step backwards!

The basque left is aware that the power they are confronting is very powerful, and that this measure (illegalization of the Basque left parties) will not mean a big cost for the State (at least in the shot term) because the government have a strong net of alliances and complicities. But, anyway, the Basque left keep firm. Even though they are aware that they are at a disadvantage, they do not step backwards. They trust their reasons, their coherence and their activists. During the last months, they have answer the State with a firm but not arrogant message: legal or illegal, they will keep on claiming the independence for our people. These are some of the most recent public activities:

December 22, 2007. An important representation of the Basque left appeared at a press conference in a special context: the imprisonment of 47 leaders and the horrific denounce of tortures made by a young man belonging to the Basque left . The message they send was firm as well as encouraging: "They have reach a limit, enough is enough!. It is time to put a limit to the "everything can be used against the Basque country" strategy. The PSOE have declare war to the pro-independence movement in order to weaken our political position and, in this way, close the doors to independence... This strategy would not be possible without the support of the parties PNV and NaBai... We will win, Euskal Herria!"

· December 29, 2007. The Basque left held a meeting attended by many people. They reiterate their bet on independence and socialism, and they affirm that the rights we have as a people must be recognized. The left announce that "they will aim their political activity towards national construction and social transformation in order to create a Basque independent and socialist state, as the only guarantee for our people to survive. A Basque state that had already exist, and was internationally recognized until the XVII century, and that will become a reality again if this is the will of their citizens. The first step in this long way is to create a Democratic Frame where all political projects would have a place. There also were strong words directed to the parties PNV and NaBai because their aim is to obstruct the construction of the Basque Country so that the construction of Spain prevails ".

· December 30, 2007. Hundreds of elected people belonging to ANV had meeting in Iruñea to reaffirm their determination to go ahead in the way towards independence. They also reiterate their determination to attend the Spanish general elections that will take place on March 9, 2008. They reminded that already on 2007 they suffered a partial illegalization, and they reiterate their denounce of the political groups that took advantage of this illegalization. They answered these groups what they think to do when new illegalizations would take place. They also recognized that the price they are paying for not accepting the Spanish constitution is very high. But they are firm: "Until now, they do not succeed in stopping us, and they will not succeed in the future".

· January 2, 2008. ANV appeal to the European Court of Human Rights against the Spanish Constitutional Court, because this court did not accept their appeal on the ground of unconstitutionality regarding the last year illegalization .

· January 12, 2008. Six thousand people attend a ANV political meeting held in Irunea to reaffirm their bet on independence. People applauded the two Basque young who were recently arrested and tortured (because of this applause the Spanish National Court has accused the woman who asked for it of supporting terrorism). PSOE was accused of being a liar and making tortures. The complicity of PNV and NaBai with the Spanish state was also denounced. The meeting finished with an invitation to keep on working for independence and socialism, even though we would be illegal.
